Coach Peter Schöttel set up his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the heavyweight clash against RB Salzburg. Sonnleitner and Patocka formed the centre back pairing for the first time Trimmel and Drazan were deployed wide while Steffen Hofmann was played just off lone striker Guido Burgstaller.Katzer gets the show up and runningThe Hütteldorfer's flew out of the blocks and beat the visitors back deep into their own half. The first chance of the afternoon fell to Steffen Hofmann after only a minute, but he fired into the side netting following a Prager centre. Trimmel nearly got on the end of a dangerous Drazan ball in the 3rd minute but Rapid weren't to be denied for long, taking the lead in the 5th minute. Drazan played the ball into full back Katzer who swiveled and shot from the edge of the area, his effort catching Salzburg stopper Eddy Gustafsson totally unawares and slamming into the back of the net. It capped an outstanding opening for the Viennese who continued to run the show, applying more and more pressure on the shell shocked visitors. An 19th minute Patocka header just cleared the crossbar while a minute later strong penalty appeals from Burgstaller were waved away by referee Gangl. Salzburg equalise out of nothingRapid continued to boss the game: their slick passing play and committed tackling proving too much for visiting Trainer Ricardo Moniz' team. It was a tepid showing from the visitors who failed to register a shot on goal in the opening half an hour of the match. As is so often the case in football, 1:0 proved to be a slim margin once again. As in the 28th minute Roman Wallner stabbed over the line from close range following a goalmouth scramble to restore parity for Red Bull. Rapid hit back just minutes later: a beautifully worked free kick saw Guido Burgstaller peel off the back of a Salzburg wall in run into space in behind. Hofmann faked to shoot but craftily played in the hit man who slammed a low drive past the helpless Gustafsson to restore a well deserved lead for the Green-Whites, which they took into the half time team talk with them. Hütteldorfers put guests to the sword  Again it was Rapid who snatched the initiative after the restart: Drazan's long range effort in the 49th minute had Gustafsson beaten, but unfortunately just whistled just past the crossbar. Rapid continued to punish Salzburg with brutal pressure and it seemed only a matter of time before the pressure told. After close shaves involving Trimmel and Atdhe Nuhiu (on for Trimmel), it was down to Burgstaller to put daylight between the sides with his second of the afternoon in the 75th minute. Hofmann laid the goal on for his follow forward with a brilliant cut back, and just minutes later he was at it again, this time he drew in the last defender before releasing the ball to Burgstaller, who finished the move with aplomb to bag a wonderful hat trick and simultaneously sink Salzburg. As the minutes wore down a suspiciously offside looking Maierhofer scored a consolation for the visitors on his return to the Hanappi, but the goal did little to dampen enthusiasm or to hide the fact that his side had been comprehensively beaten at the superior team on the day.tipp3-Bundesliga, 15th round:SK Rapid - RB Salzburg 4:2 (2:1)Gerhard Hanappi-Stadion, 17.500, Gangl.Goals: 1:0 (5.)
